Ford India got off on the right foot in the compact SUV segment by bringing in EcoSport. Despite mounting popularity of the SUV, the company was aware of the rising competition that was underway when it launched EcoSport a couple of years ago, hence the mild facelift as we can call the current version was imminent. Facelift model albeit is not a comprehensive one, Ford has kept the exterior design untouched, which in true senses did not even require a makeover, although minimal tweaks can be noticed on the outside. Similarly, interior styling and layout remains unchanged, but Ford has added a couple of features. The salient change made to the SUV is the inclusion of a new and more robust diesel powertrain to the range. Petrol engine powered the gasoline version is inherited from the previous model which is available in both manual and automatic choices. Crucial safety features like anti-lock-braking system and electronic brakeforce distribution are now available across model series, skipping the base trim. And there is a new variant in the line up called ‘Trend+’. Ford EcoSport price in India hasn’t been affected much with the changes made; hence it is still in favour of the SUV.
There isn’t much of a change inside too, the layout remains untouched but a couple of additions have been made like the illuminated speedometer, new AC vents, chrome tipped parking brake and a few more changes. Enveloped in a dual tone dual tone dark colour palette, the cabin appears dark. Use of leather is visible on steering wheel, hand brake and MT gear shifter knob. Seats are covered with fabric upholstery save for the range topping variant that gets leather covers. Chrome embellishment is also exclusive to the top-spec variant giving a miss to the rest of the trims. Driver’s seat gets height adjuster as well as lumbar support and an arm rest is also placed for the comfort of driver. A footrest is also put in place for driver. There are various storage compartments and cuby holes within the cabin. Comfort of rear passengers is also given prime significance, a 60:40 split back folding seat with reclining function is affixed at the back. Moreover, rear seats also feature adjustable head rests. A 12 V socket is given in front and rear also (in higher trims). Ford’s SYNC AppLink with voice control is absent in lower variants and the 3.5 MFD screen is provided only on the automatic variant. Standard features across range include FM/AM Radio, Aux-In and USB port and Bluetooth. CD player and MP3 player are missing in the entry level variants. Steering wheel gets adjustable tilt and telescopic functions, besides they also feature mounted audio controls. There is a cooled glove box that is useful in long journeys especially during summers. Windows in front and rear can be adjusted electrically. There is a one-touch up & down function on driver side window and cabin also gets push start button.
Apart from a few additional elements like revamped head lights with LED daytime running lights, reworked skid plates and the new 17 inch alloy wheels. There is no change dimensionally; even the ground clearance has been kept intact. Ford EcoSport pictures of the exteriors give a sneak peek into the unchanged design. Front bumper is wide and aggressive which makes the bonnet appear short. Most of the space on the front bumper is occupied by lower grille featuring honeycomb grille at the backdrop and marked by sleek chrome outlines on the outside. Fog lamps are placed adjacent to the front grille. Sweptback home safe head lights are lean joined by a thin chrome treated grille. The signature LED lights in front are assertive and bold leaving a style statement. Bumpers in front and rear are body coloured. Lower bumper features black cladding which accentuates ruggedness of the SUV. Side profile is equally stylish as its front fascia. Alloy wheels are shod with all four tyres in the higher trims, while the base trims get steel wheels. Outside door handles and outside rear view mirrors both are coloured in body paint. Turn indicators are integrated on the power adjusting and power folding ORVMs. Window line is highlighted by chrome lining appearing simplistic and chic at the same time. Silver roof rails at the top, a sharp line running from A pillar to C pillar and black body cladding in between the wheels further pitch in the sporty flair of the SUV. Rear comes with a mounted spare wheel, chrome swing gate door handle, wrap around tail lamps, integrated spoiler and black cladding. One of the other important features that EcoSport gets are rain sensing wipers.
EcoSport is available in three engine choices that comprises of two petrol and one diesel units. Petrol variants as mentioned above come with two engine options including a 1.5 litre Ti-VCT engine and globally renowned 1.0 litre, Ecoboost engine. Diesel variants get a new motor, the 1.5 litre TDi powertrain that offer increased power as against its predecessor. The 1.5 litre petrol engine belts out 112 PS at 6300 RPM along with 140 Nm of torque at 4400 RPM. On the other hand the 1.0 litre EcoBoost petrol engine can develop 125 PS of power at 6000 RPM along with 170 Nm torque between 1400 to 4500 RPM. Diesel engine offers increased power of 100 PS at 3750 RPM and 205 Nm torque between 1750 to 3250 RPM. Ford EcoSport transmission choices include a manual and an automatic gearbox. The automatic gearbox is available on the petrol Titanium variant only.
Claimed fuel efficiency delivered by the diesel version of EcoSport is 22.27 kms in a litre. While the 1.0 litre, EcoBoost petrol engine can return fuel economy of 18.88 kms in a litre. The mileage numbers for both versions are as per tests conducted by ARAI.
The award winning 1.0 litre, EcoBoost engine is known for its agile performance globally. The other two mills which include 1.5 litre petrol and diesel engines are adept performers too. Moreover, changes made to the diesel engine have resulted in insignificant drop in fuel economy but the engine’s power output has increased which offer more punch.
Stopping power is provided by ventilated disc brakes in front and drum brakes at rear. Anti-lock-braking system and electronic brakeforce distribution are standard across line-up except for the entry level variant. Automatic version gets exclusive safety equipment such as emergency brake assist, electronic stability control, traction control system and hill launch assist. Dual front airbags are provided from mid-level trim while side curtain bags are available only on the high end variants. Other significant safety fitments aboard are emergency assist, configurable speed alarm in fuel computer, ISOFIX, rear parking sensors and emergency brake hazard warning. Security features like remote central locking with flip key, smart keyless entry, immobiliser system, electric swing gate release and locking wheel nut for spare wheel are also incorporated in the vehicle.
