More About Hyundai Verna

Hyundai India has raised the curtains off its new and improved Verna, which is now dubbed “Hyundai 4S Fluidic Verna.” The new Verna squad comprises five variants each in the petrol and diesel guises, including eight manual trims and two automatic variants (one each in petrol and diesel). The tweaked version of the C segment sedan has undergone styling and mechanical upgrades, and has got some additional features. Changed exteriors feature a restyled bumper and revamped fog lamp housings. Also, the front grille is now larger, the bonnet has been reworked and the rear is marked by modified tail lights. Inside the cabin, the audio player gets integrated 1 GB memory. The steering now comes with a “reach adjust” function; the ergo lever is also equipped with this feature, which permits the rear passengers to forward front seat for roomier legroom. Mechanical tweaks have been made to enhance the efficiency of diesel mills and along with that, suspension has also been refined.
Only the high-end variants feature leather upholstery and all the other trims sitting below it get fabric seat covers. Except for the base trims, rest of the range comes with wood garnish instrument panel finish. The leather package exquisite to top-of-the-line trims includes leather-wrapped steering, TGS knob, console armrest and driver armrest. Contrary to the leather package, chrome interior package is bestowed on the entire line-up, missing out on the entry level trims. The chrome interior package comprises chrome-finished AC vents, inside door handles, rear garnish and parking lever button (only on the base trim). Map pockets are given on front and rear doors across the range. The instrument panel and centre fascia display features like blue interior illumination, supervision cluster and tachometer. Warning indicators are given for low fuel, door ajar, trunk lid open and seat belt reminder. Driver information display flashes ignition key reminder and gear shift indicator. There are a host of comfort and convenience equipment inside the cabin in a typical Hyundai fashion - smart key with push start button, automatic air conditioner with cluster ionizer, sliding front console armrest with storage space, rear central armrest with cup holder, driver side ticket holder, ergolever in the front passenger seat, rain-sensing wipers, variable intermittent front wiper, tilt and telescopic motor driver power steering, luggage lamp, front seat back pockets, power windows on the front and rear with driver side auto up-down, time lag functions, and height-adjustable front seatbelts for the driver and passengers, among few others. Driver’s seat gets tilt-adjustable feature and rear seat gets fixed headrests. From the entertainment segment, a 2-DIN audio system with 1 GB memory, steering-mounted audio controls with Bluetooth handsfree, Bluetooth connectivity, four speakers and front tweeters have been incorporated.
The pictures of Hyundai 4S Fluidic Verna given below show the moderate exterior upgrades that have been done on the saloon. Up front, new Verna adorns chrome-finished front grille, and redesigned body-coloured bumper having fog lamps with retouched housings and wider air intakes. Bonnet features character lines, which render it a sporty semblance. Projector head lights with escort function are equipped on either edges of the front grille. Alloy wheels (R15 clean silver and R16 diamond cut with dual tone finish) are incorporated, rendering a polished look to the side profile. Body-coloured outside door handles are offered on the base trims while mid- and top-end variants get chrome finished door handles. Similarly, body-coloured rear garnishing is bestowed on the base trim, where as mid and top variants feature chrome rear garnishing. Outside, rear view mirrors come with integrated LED turn indicators, and can be adjusted and folded electrically. Other than the styling cues mentioned above, door blackout tapes and micro roof antenna are also equipped on the exteriors.
There are four engines powering the Verna range. Petrol variants get a 1.4-litre gasoline engine with VTVT technology equipped in the base trims and for the higher trims, a 1.6-litre VTVT engine is available. Similarly, diesel variants also get a 1.4-litre CRDi engine housed in the entry level variants and a 1.6-litre CRDi motor armed in the top end trims. All engines feature four cylinders and get DOHC valve train. The 1.4-litre, VTVT petrol engine is good for 107 PS of top power at 6300 RPM along with the peak torque of 13.8 Kgm at 5000 RPM. On the other hand, the higher displacement 1.6-litre gasoline engine engenders maximum power and torque of 123 PS at 6300 RPM and 15.8 kgm at 4200 RPM, respectively. The diesel range features a 1.4-litre CRDi motor capable of developing zenith power of 90 PS at 4000 RPM and mounting torque of 22.4 kgm between 1750 and 2750 RPM. The 1.6-litre CRDi diesel power train offers a towering power of 128 PS at 4000 RPM along with the top torque of 26.5 kgm between 1900 and 2750 RPM. Hyundai 4S Fluidic Verna transmission options include a conventional 5-speed manual gearbox, a 6-speed manual gearbox and a 4-speed automatic transmission. The 6-speed manual transmission is affixed in three 1.6-litre CRDi variants, including S, S (O) and SX, while the base 1.4-litre diesel trim gets 5-speed manual gearbox. The 4-speed automatic tranny is restricted to the 1.6-litre S(O) petrol and 1.6-litre SX diesel trims.
On the mileage front, the sedan has been improved to deliver a promising performance, all thanks to the mechanical tweaks made especially to the diesel power train. The 1.6-litre petrol engine can run up to 17.04 kmpl and the lower displacement 1.4-litre VTVT petrol engine is claimed to deliver 17.04 kmpl. The diesel range, which includes a 1.4-litre CRDi engine and a 1.6-litre CRDi motor, is capable of running up to 23.9 kmpl and 24.8 kmpl, respectively.
Performance and handling have improved majorly, courtesy the mechanical tweaks made to the saloon. Refined suspension enables the new Verna to stay composed even at high speed, which was not experienced earlier, and like before, it feels soft at low speed. The new Verna feels more stabilised while driving; however, the diesel trims are more fun to drive while the petrol trims still seem softer, lacking the required punch. Comparing Hyundai 4S Fluidic Verna with Ford Fiesta and Fiat Linea, the latter models are hands down much better when it comes to handling. Hence there is still some room left when it comes to this segment; however, Hyundai has addressed the issue prominently, evident in the previous model. The top speed of Hyundai 4S Fluidic Verna for teh petrol 1.6-litre MT variant is 191 kmph and for 1.6-litre AT version, it is 175 kmph.
Disc brakes at the front and Drum brakes at the rear have been fitted. Anti-lock braking system with electronic brake force distribution is offered as standard across the range. Safety features standard in all the variants include clutch lock system, central locking (driver side) and immobilizer. Features exquisite to the high-end trims are speed-sensing auto door lock, and side and curtain airbags. Other than these, the mid and high level trims come incorporated with driver and co-passenger side airbags, rear view camera with display on ECM, rear parking sensors, impact-sensing auto door unlock, rear defogger with timer, and automatic headlight control.
